Cellular Phones - A Technology Review

Cell (short for cellular) phones, also known as mobile phones or wireless phones, are small hand-held phones with built-in antennas. Unlike home phones, cell phones can be carried from place to place with ease. This makes them a good choice for people who want to be in touch with other people even when they are away from the house.

Notable among these phones are the ones known as smart phones. Though earlier varieties of cell phones were developed without a microprocessor, most recent mobiles have been based on a microprocessor and a dedicated Operating System such as Android. These are also known as smart phones because they accommodate complex functionalities such as writing office documents, VOIP phone calls, etc.

A cell phone operates in conjunction with a cell tower that receives signals from a cell phone and forwards the same towards destination. Three widely used technologies in cellular phones are

  • a. GSM (Global System For Mobile Communication)
  • b. CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)
  • c. iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network)

The protocols followed include 2G, 3g, 3.5G, and 4G (Developmental). Progressively, these technologies offer value added services like VOIP, broadband Internet, and video calls.

Some of the important features of cellular phones include

  • Camera in mobile phones
  • Accessing internet from mobile phones using VoIP
  • Applications like Office Document Support
  • Interfaces support like USB, HDMI, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Infrared
  • Audio/Video formats in mobile phones
  • Single SIM v/s Dual SIM mobile phones, and others.

Further, with the advent of high speed low power processors, and free mobile Operating Systems such as Android, the smart phone have become more affordable and feature rich.
